Unless otherwise stated, position statements and advocacy letters are written by the elected and appointed board. They are designed to support mathematics leaders in their work with policy, practice, and/or procedure in their division or school.

Response to the introductory section to the 2023 VDOE Math Standards of Learning

Prior to the August 31, 2023 special Virginia Board of Education Meeting, VCMS submitted a letter of concern to the Board advocating for a public review of the preface that was not available during the public review of the standards, expressing concern and requesting clarification for some of the statements made in the preface. Response to Proposed Math Standards Timeline

Prior to the June 15, 2023 Virginia Board of Education Meeting, VCMS submitted a letter of concern to the Board advocating for a more appropriate timeline. Revisions to the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning

In advance of the revision to the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning, VCMS submitted a statement advocating for some general changes. These changes include focusing on standards that are limited in number so as to provide enough time for students to gain deeper understanding of the concept. In addition, standards should be relevant for all children, removing content that is obselete due to its lack of use in society or other mathematics classes or that which can be easily performed by readily available technology. VCMS Supports Modernizing Mathematics

There is a great need need to modernize mathematics curriculum and instruction, which has not changed significantly since the conception of public education by the Committee of Ten in the late 1800s. While there are challenges that arise with significant modifications to curriculum and instruction, these modifications are necessary in order to prepare students for success in postsecondary life in the 21st century. We, as an organization, are committed to offering support in overcoming these challenges and ensuring modernization of mathematics in Virginia. Read the full statement below.
