2026 Math Leader of the Year

Dr. Deb Crawford


This year's recipient of the VCMS Math Leader of the Year award is an exceptional statewide mathematics leader whose impact spans more than a decade of transformative work in K–12 mathematics, computer science, and data science education. She has co-led major Virginia Department of Education initiatives—including the Shenandoah Valley Computer Science Regional Partnership, which expanded hybrid learning, professional development, student camps, and curriculum innovation for hundreds of teachers and students—and played a pivotal role on the statewide Data Science Pathways Task Force, serving as a co-author of Virginia’s first high school data science standards adopted in 2022. Her leadership extends across the Commonwealth through service as a past VCMS president, long-standing VMSC board member, and recipient of multiple statewide honors, including VDOE CS Educator of the Year, the VCTM Lowery Award for Math Specialist of the Year, and multiple VMSC Programs That Work awards. Her record of vision, collaboration, and statewide influence makes her an outstanding and highly deserving recipient of this award.

“A highly skilled elementary math specialist that possesses a deep understanding of mathematics content and pedagogy and is an expert facilitator of professional learning. His leadership extends beyond the role as a mathematics specialist as he is actively involved in state and national organizations. Most notable is his leadership with Math Forward. Through this work, he galvanized districts across the state building a path for them to collaborate and share resources to affect mathematics across multiple districts. His contributions to these organizations have significantly impacted the field of mathematics education.”
